Halo 2 online gameplay famous young kid9/17/2023 ![]() ![]() Blue and I still remember meeting Burnie for the first time and how Microsoft's first instinct was to shut them down or charge huge licenses but Pete and myself (and others) fought for the marketing and promotional merits of their work and a phenomenon was born. We got called out for that even though it wasn't really a 'bull shot.' But damn they looked great. Since it was impossible to really coordinate and get an exact moment we had to use fixed cameras, stage each player as a separate screenshot and then composite it all together. We didn't have saved films so we had to use the console command to set 'gamespeed 0' and try to freeze it at the exact right time. I look at all the screenshots we released for Halo 2 and pretty much remember taking every single one. Zanzibar was amazing fun and the shenanigans of Warthogs getting caught up in the turbine wheel never ceased to entertain. We did so many demos over the span of that E3 and beyond. I can still nearly recite the entire thing by heart. On Twitter I posted a photo of the original Halo 2 Multiplayer demo script I found in a box of keepsakes. I was enamored with meeting Jen Taylor in person and hanging out with David Scully (Sgt Johnson) who had me in tears with laughter all night (he was in character ALL NIGHT). Jason even made a surprise appearance and signed autographs and mingled (super rare even back then!). I'll never forget our big after hours FanFest we did in the Xbox booth at E3 when we got free run of the entire floor and Jaime Griesemer went completely off script in the demo theater and our fans loved every second of it. This continued for days and weeks, I still have no idea how he did that. The test manager had a fridge at his desk and would start the day around 7AM drinking beers around the clock and be full into hard alcohol by early afternoon. ![]() At the time I couldn't believe that the team would actually get that amount of work done in the crazy short amount of time left until launch. I remember a meeting where Jason Jones had white boards of all the game's missions and basically explained how nearly half the game was being scrapped and would have to be re-done. I remember the "Space Pickle" announce trailer and how amazing it looked and then going to a team meeting and learning that the entire underlying tech had to be ripped out because the lighting system wasn't going to be practical. ![]() I remember frantically working to build and deliver a first-of-it's-kind console/web stats experience (we looked at what Epic had been doing on PC as a what we wanted to strive for). I joined Bungie two years before we shipped Halo 2 and man was it a whirlwind.
